Hey guys,
I was attempting to memorize the poem and was wondering what it meant. I think I would be easier to remember if I actually understood what I was reading.

I agree that understanding the meaning of the prologue will make it easier to memorize.
From what I understand, the first half discusses the beginning of spring with telling of April's rain showers creating new plants, birds singing birds, and other nature images. The end of poem then discusses pilgrims and that they travel to shrines in far away lands. It also specifically mentions a shrine in Canterbury dedicated to a martyr.

Since its a prologue it foreshadows the story, so I guess that the story will deal with pilgrims going to Canterbury or the martyr himself. At least that's what I thought was going on in the first 18 lines.

I agree with Burke on this one, and I believe that the significance of the poem beginning describing all of these events in nature is that it describes Canterbury itself, where the pilgrims from far away are planning to travel to
